When someone in Halifax searches "plumber near me" or "best dentist in Dartmouth", Google shows a map with three businesses pinned to it. That box is called the Map Pack (or Local Pack), and ranking inside it is the single highest-ROI thing most local businesses can do online. Studies consistently show the Map Pack earns more clicks than every organic result below it combined.

Google ranks the Map Pack on three pillars: relevance, distance, and prominence. You can't move your storefront, but you have a lot of control over the other two.

1. Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the foundation. A half-finished profile will never outrank a complete one. Fill in every field:

  • Exact business name, address, and phone number (your "NAP")
  • Primary category — and every relevant secondary category
  • Service areas, hours, and holiday hours
  • Services and products with descriptions
  • At least 10 real photos of your work, team, and location
  • A keyword-rich "from the business" description

2. Get consistent 5-star reviews

Review quantity, quality, and recency are among the strongest Map Pack signals. A business getting two or three new reviews a month will steadily climb past a competitor sitting on old reviews. Ask every happy customer, make it effortless with a direct review link, and always respond — Google rewards engagement. We break the whole system down in how to get more 5-star Google reviews.

3. Keep your NAP consistent everywhere

Google cross-checks your name, address, and phone number across the web — Yelp, YellowPages, Facebook, industry directories, your own site. Even small inconsistencies (Suite 2 vs. #2, an old phone number) erode trust and rankings. Pick one exact format and use it everywhere. This is called citation consistency, and it is unglamorous but powerful.

4. Post weekly and use GBP features

An active profile signals a live, legitimate business. Publish a Google Post weekly, answer questions in the Q&A section, keep hours current, and add new photos monthly. Profiles that are actively maintained outperform abandoned ones.

5. Strengthen your website's local SEO

Your GBP and your website work together. Service-plus-city landing pages, on-page local SEO, fast load times, and LocalBusiness schema all reinforce your relevance for Halifax searches. A strong site lifts the whole profile.

How long does it take?

With a well-optimized profile and steady reviews, most Halifax businesses see meaningful movement in 4–8 weeks. Competitive categories take longer. The good news: unlike paid ads, these gains stick around once you earn them.

The fastest win this week

If you only do one thing: complete every field on your Google Business Profile and ask your last five happy customers for a review. That alone moves more businesses into the Map Pack than any other single action.
