Why isn't my business showing up on Google Maps?
The most common reasons local businesses miss the map pack — and what actually fixes them.
If you search for what you do in your town and your business doesn't appear in the map pack, the problem is rarely "Google hates me." It's usually a handful of fixable signals Google uses to decide who shows up first.
Your profile isn't fully claimed or verified
An unclaimed or half-finished Google Business Profile won't compete with businesses that have categories, service areas, hours, photos, and a steady review flow. Claim it, verify it, and fill every field that describes what you actually sell.
Categories and service areas are wrong
Google matches search intent to your primary category first. A roofer listed as a "contractor" loses to competitors listed as "roofing contractor." Service areas matter too — if you serve five towns but only list one, you won't show for the other four.
Your website sends conflicting signals
A noindex tag, a broken mobile menu, or a builder page that takes eight seconds to load can all hurt local visibility. Google cross-checks your site against your profile. When they disagree — different phone numbers, missing address, thin content — trust drops.
Reviews are too few or too stale
Two businesses with similar ratings can rank very differently when one has 40 recent reviews and the other has six from three years ago. You don't need hundreds. You need a system that asks happy customers consistently.
What to do next
Start with a honest audit: search your main service in your main town, note who ranks above you, and compare profiles side by side. Fix categories and service areas first — they're free and fast. Then tackle reviews and the site technicals. If you want a second pair of eyes, that's what the free site audit is for.
