Case study · AI tool, my own product
SolveHFX: an AI reporting tool live across all 16 Halifax districts
Snap a photo of a pothole or a broken streetlight and AI drafts a formal report and sends it to the right authority.
Figures as shown on solvehfx.ca in November 2026.
The problem
Reporting a civic issue in Halifax should not take an afternoon of forms and phone trees. Issues can disappear into a 311 queue.
What I built
- Take a photo and the AI identifies the issue, classifies how serious it is and writes a formal report
- Smart routing to the right authority: HRM 311, Nova Scotia Public Works for provincial roads and highways, or Halifax Transit
- Every report is copied to the resident's district councillor
- No account needed. A report takes about a minute, and you get a reference number to track it
- 28 issue categories, a map and district scorecards
Why it works this way
The tool does one job and does it quickly: turn a photo into a report that reaches the right person. Working out who is responsible is a hurdle, so the tool does that for the resident.
I built and shipped it on my own, which is also the approach I take with the AI tools I build for small businesses: one specific job, done well.
Results
As of November 2026, SolveHFX has 309 reports filed and 51 issues resolved, and it is active in all 16 HRM districts.
